Abstract:  Black holes and neutron stars are at the heart of many high-energy astrophysical phenomena and continue to inspire several aspects of modern theoretical physics and astrophysics.

Powering some of the most luminous transients in the universe across the electromagnetic band and the gravitational wave spectrum, merging compact binaries are prime targets for current and future multi-messenger astronomy.

Leveraging advances in modern computational relativistic astrophysics and numerical relativity enables us to uncover novel insights into this extreme side of the relativistic universe.

In this talk, I will show some of the most recent developments in this field, including how merging neutron stars can power the strongest shocks in the universe, or how strong magnetic fields may alter the evolution of supermassive black hole binaries, and can enable new electromagnetic transients in the upcoming age of space-based gravitational wave detections.

Bio:  Elias Most is a computational and theoretical astrophysicist interested in the physics of compact objects, such as neutron stars and black holes. His interests revolve around questions of fundamental physics at the intersection of gravitational, nuclear and plasma astrophysics.

Recently, he started a position as Assistant Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology. He is a member of the TAPIR group.
Before moving to California, he was the John Archibald Wheeler postdoctoral fellow at the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science, the Princeton Gravity Initiative and a five-year member of the Institute for Advanced Study. Previously, he was a predoctoral fellow at the Center for Computational Astrophysics at the Flatiron Institute in New York and a graduate student at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany. More information can be found in his CV.
